Myth #1: People did not play ranked 8v8 therefore it needed to be eliminated from the game.
Rebuttal: Ranked 8v8 was never given a chance. The promise of Season 1 never materialized; it was delayed over and over. The game suffered huge declines in population the first year of release from the mismanagement of server populations, lack of new contact and forced server merges. Once the game settled from the opening debacle, there was still a large, dedicated PVP community that regularly played. I refer you to links such as this; which illustrate the community comradely, and confirms multiple guilds that were queuing on a regular basis for EIGHT MAN TEAM ORIENTED RANKED PVP :
This is just a small, small sample of the interest ranked play was getting. I played on Pot5; and when server transfers were announced the interest in Ranked play grew even more; as top teams from other servers began considering to transfer to Pot5 and determine which teams were actually the best.
So what killed off the 8v8? Well, naturally it was EA themselves; not understanding their own game; and forcing the ranked arenas; which has PROVEN to actually reduce the interest in ranked PVP even more. Not only are the numbers declining (which would be even more apparent if they hadn't given conquest points for the PVE'ers) but group play is dull and boring. The maps really are irrelevant; whereas in 8 man the maps were important because there were different strategies for taking and defending nodes; not to mention hutt ball. In 8v8; there was more forgiveness in class/team makeup compared to the 4x4. The arenas have done nothing but sink development time into creating maps that could have gone towards 8 player maps. Only one map, (new huttball), in an entire year is unacceptable. This has led to many people quitting the game and leads me to myth #2
Myth #2: PVP servers don't do very well
Rebuttal: If you were to look at the PVP servers now compared to 18 months ago there is certainly a reason that contributes to this myth; which is the decline in population. However, as we looked at in rebutting Myth #1 you can't just take those numbers and attribute it to the nature of the server itself.
EA has made several decisions that they are now paying the price for, namely the loss of dedicated PVP players. Instead of just saying PVP servers don't do well; what people need to say is that "PVP servers that are negligently developed with little to no new content with poor ranked experience and open world do poorly".
Because the truth of the matter is that PVP servers do quite well actually. Pot5 was heavy all the time; and the community was very active in TRYING to get open world events going; for example:
Unfortunately, the EA engine is not well suited to large, open world events but it was fun; and just shows that there was large support for PVP if the game developers had been able to make it work.
In summary; please do not allow people to justify the lack of PVP development by repeating the lies of EA. They try to point the finger at the players instead of themselves; and the only thing that can keep our forums honest are each one of you.
